Jayendrabhai and Madhuben requested a special poem to celebrate the 98th birthday of their maternal grand-mother, Dahi Ma. It's a great honour to be asked to write about someone's life. To distill Dahi Ma's 98 years in a few verses wa going to be a particular challenge. To make sure my poem was a true reflection of 'her life', I spent a wonderful afternoon interviewing Dahi Ma, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. I wanted to get an idea of what her life was like from her own perspective, how people saw her and how she impacted their lives.
I am glad to say the poem was well recieved by Dahi Ma and her extended family. Her great grandchildren sang it at the family function in Feb 2013 and everyone was touched by the emotions it conveyed. Jayendrabhai was kind enough to ask me to compose a Sanskrit and a Gujarati poem for her centanial celebrations in 2015.
નાના નાના નાનીમા, વ્હાલા વ્હાલા દાદીમા,
તારાં મારાં ડાહીમા, સૌના પ્યારા ડાહી બા.
ગૌરવવંતી ગુજરાતી, મરાગ્વા ને નાઈરોબી,
પોટર્સબારના પૂજારી, લંડન ગામ ના રહેવાસી.
સુરાભાઇ ને લીલાબેન ના પ્યારા પુત્રી ડાહીબા,
ચાર બહેન ને બે ભાઈના લાડીલા બેહેની ડાહીમાં.
શાંત કાન્ત ને ઠરેલ છે, જીવરાજજી ને વરેલ છે,
"પહેલું સુખ તે જાતે નર્યા", જીવનમાં ઉતાર્યું છે.
કપરા દિ તો દીઠા છે, ખારા પાણી પીધા છે,
સૌને સાથે રાખ્યા છે, સાતા સૌના સાચવ્યા છે.
ચાર ચાર પેઢી દીઠી છે, સૌને પ્રેમથી જીતી છે,
રમા જેન્તી રસિક છે, જયા દિનેશ નાના છે.
લડે નહિ, વઢે નહિ, ઉચાં સાદે બોલે નહિ,
મીઠી મઝાની વાત કરે, સુડલો ભરી વ્હાલ કરે.
શાલ સ્વેટર ગૂંથી આપે, સુંદર ગુંદર પાક
બનાવે,
દરણા દળી, રોટલા ઘડી, ઘી ગોળ ને શાક જમાડે.
જામનગરથી પાલીતાણા, છરી પાડી જાત્રા કરી,
નૌવાણું જાત્રા અને ઉપધાન કરી, મોક્ષ માળા પહેરી છે.
ઓળી આમ્બીલ કીધા છે, અઠ્ઠાઇ અમૃત પીધા છે,
તપથી તનને તાપ્યા છે, મનમાં "જીનને" (મહાવીર) સ્થાપ્યા છે.
